Issue #0: "The Road to Kaabari"
April 1994

Cover: Max Siebel; Script: John Riley; Interior Art: Max Siebel; Letters: Susan Dorne; Colors: Garrett Berner; Graphic Designer: Eric Shefferman; Production: Vincent DeSimone

Note: This issue takes place in GCY 475, three years before the start of CM #1.

Chromium Man and his wife, Candi, attack one of the Realm's deep-space antimatter refueling stations, which is surrounded by Realm troops. The Chromium Man has concocted a desperate plan to keep his former masters in the Realm from hunting him down: he'll detonate the antimatter core of the station, destroying it and everything around it for light years. He hopes that this will make the Realm believe him dead and stop pursuing him (presuming he survives the explosion). They blow up the station, and Candi is apparently killed. The Chromium Man survives, floats through space for months in his metal dormant state until an old freighter pilot named Kreg picks him up and agrees to drop him on a remote Realm world called Kaabari. He finds a cave to stay in while he scouts a nearby town and gets to know the people of Kaabari. After months of living in the cave he heads into town, takes the name Kaanar, and soon secures employment with a logger named Klaarok, who gives him a place to live and a good salary. Kaanar meets and becomes friends with Klaarok's daughter, Laayana. Sparks fly and the two begin to fall in love. The two eventually marry and purchase a nearby farm. Kaanar believes he has finally found the peace he has craved for so long.

Issue # 1: untitled
Aug. 1993

Cover: Adam Pollina; Writer: John Riley; Penciller/Inker: Adam Pollina; Interior Colorist: Garrett Berner; Letterer: Gary Peterson

In the wilds of Kaabari, Kaanar, once known as the Chromium Man, goes in pursuit of a wild Daathra beast that's been attacking the herds of Faatimers on the farm he runs with his wife, Laayana. Kaanar is forced to assume his chromium form for the first time in three years. Meanwhile Laayana, who believes that Kaabari should be free of Realm control, attends a protest in support of an independent Kaabari. While at the rally, Governor Tarsak calls in Riot Gear troops to disperse the crowd. Things get ugly as most of the crowd is slaughtered, and Laayana is captured along with her friend Haanok. Kaanar returns home to find that his wife is not there. Seeing the devastation on television, he journeys to Jaakinbah to rescue his wife, breaking into the Realm citadel and freeing the prisoners. Laayana, not recognizing her husband in his chromium form, shrinks away in terror. They are interrupted by the arrival of more Riot Gear troops, whom Kaanar kills. He is taken prisoner after a henchman of Tarsak's threatens to destroy the entire citadel. Taken to Tarsak's office, Kaanar persuades the Governor to destroy the Riot Gear commander, who is flying back to his starship, warning Tarsak that if the Realm learns that Chromium is on Kaabari, they will destroy the entire planet to kill him.

Tarsak grudgingly agrees to play along for now, but vows that someday get revenge on the Chromium Man. Kaanar and Laayana then decide that it would be safest for all concerned if they leave Kaabari for parts unknown. They board a passenger freighter and depart. They soon encounter a very rude Prince Vandal. Kaanar and Vandal nearly get into a fight, but Laayana intercedes. In a rare moment of quiet, Kaanar tells Laayana about the history of the Riot Guard and his own past. Soon after departing Kaabari, the freighter is attacker by Kovarian pirates. The Chromium Man and Prince Vandal both defend the ship. In the midst of fighting, Prince Vandal discovers that Kaanar is a former member of the Riot Guard. He makes Kaanar promise to fight him at a later date, but they join forces to defeat the Kovarians and destroy their ship. As a reward for saving the ship, Prince Vandal makes the ship's captain give Kaanar and Laayana his own personal flyer, and sends them on their way. Kaanar and Laayana sell their ship and seek shelter with Kaanar's old friend (and ex-wife) Candi, who he has discovered is still alive. The Phylenites stop a Mutha Fwa from attacking Kaanar. Kaanar and Laayana arrive at Candi's to a warm reception. The bounty hunter Breaker tracks them to the Landing and kills the broker who purchased their ship. Candi agrees to help Kaanar and Laayana disappear again, but Breaker and Coil interrupt, hoping to claim bounty placed on Kaanar's head by Governor Tarsak. Kaanar and Breaker fight, while Coil attacks Candi and Laayana, attempting to use them as hostages. To his surprise, he finds Candi to be much more dangerous than he had anticipated. Laayana, tired of being the weak link in her marriage, asks Candi to train her to be a warrior like her. Candi reluctantly agrees, and the two begin training heavily. Candi warns her that her relationship with Kaanar may change once he sees her as a warrior and not a helpless damsel in distress, but Laayana continues the training anyway. On Islandia Kaanar and Laayana purchase a farm and develop a friendship with several of their neighbors. Two of them, Oddsley and Uriah, are themselves superhuman outcasts, so Kaanar decides to reveal his origins and abilities. The farmers accept him as he is, and for a time their lives are peaceful and happy. Uriah's anti-Realm sentiments attract attention to him, and Realm troops are sent to arrest him for treason. Kaanar and his friends make a stand, and Laayana is forced for the first time to use her new skills as a warrior. After defeating the Realm troops, Kaanar realizes that he cannot escape his past as the Chromium Man, and decides to return to Kaabari to make a stand against the Realm. Kaanar and Laayana take up residence in the cave where the Chromium Man lived when he first came to Kaabari. Laayana sneaks into the city early the next day to gather information. While there, she speaks to an old friend who informs her about Tarsak's latest abuses, including the internment of his former assistant, Tehroa. Kaanar continues Laayana's combat training as they organize the resistance that has developed to fight Tarsak's rule. Their first mission is to liberate one of Tarsak's work camps. From there they began to dismantle Tarsak's operations, hitting munitions dumps, work camps, prisons, and other targets. Finally, Kaanar leads his troops in an attack on Tarsak himself. After battling his way through hordes of Realm troops, the Chromium Man came face to face with Tarsak, who threatened to blow up the planet to destroy him. His assistant, Ralmon, seeing Tarsak as insane, deactivated the Planet Cracker and joined the Rebellion. Tarsak, in a rage attacks the Chromium Man, who drops him out a window into the hands of an angry mob, which tears Tarsak to pieces.

Kaanar and the people of Kaabari realize that with Tarsak dead, the Realm will annihilate the planet as an example to other rebels: Kaabari isn't valuable enough to fight for. They decide that they must free Tehroa from the last remaining Realm military base under Realm control and get his advice about what to do. Kaanar singlehandedly enters the base and wipes out all of the soldiers there, but not before they are able to send a message out to the Realm fleet. Tehroa reveals that there is no hope, and plans are made to evacuate a small portion of the population before the Realm fleet arrives. Ships arrive from neighboring systems, including their old friend, Krane Jammer, in order to evacuate the people of Kaabari. Laayana visits her parents' graves one last time, and promises them that she will keep Kaabari alive in her heart forever. That night, under the full moon, Laayana wakes Kaanar and takes him into the forest to perform a ritual known as the Chaakara, which binds people together closer than any marriage. The next day, the Realm troops arrive and Kaanar and Laayana flee aboard Krane's ship. As they fly off into space, the people of Kaabari ignite the Planet Cracker that Tarsak had installed into the core of Kaabari, preferring to destroy their own world rather than let the Realm do it for them.
